Mechanical Design Engineer - Composites | Clipper Wind Power | Carpinteria, CA

SUMMARY:
This self motivated individual will be interacting with internal and external Engineers and Technicians to develop designs, prepare specification documents, manufacturing and test procedures for fabrication, assembly and maintenance of the Clipper turbine's nacelle. Additional duties will include the development of standardized nacelle repairs and their procedures, maintenance of technical documentation and assistance with nacelle testing. Some travel will be required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop designs for new composite parts and assemblies.
  • Prepare drawings and specifications, conduct design reviews with peers.
  • Communicate with and support work performed by suppliers, manufacturing and test personnel.
  • Analyze test data and contribute to test reports in accordance with the test objectives and in compliance with the standards prescribed within the test plans.
  • Travel to project sites to support installation of components/assemblies, trouble shoot and diagnose problems, implement corrective actions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Design/process knowledge of fiberglass composites and polymers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to edit and compose report text and correspondences and to present company information articulately.
  • Team player, polite, professional manner required.
  • Strong organizational skills required.
  • Required: BSME, BS Manufacturing or Process Engineering or equivalent. Candidates with comparable experience in lieu of degree are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong project leadership, process engineering and process improvement skills.
  • Experience with composites, including tooling, series production of epoxy and polyester parts.
  • Knowledge of wet lay-up, vacuum bagging, and infusion is essential..
  • Knowledge of CAD: ProEngineer Wildfire; AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of ISO and OSHA standards.
  • Ability to examine and repair composite nacelle.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills are required
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast paced team environment.
  • Proficiency with Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel; familiarity with Microsoft Project a plus; web-savvy.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Large composite structures experience is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • May be exposed to fiberglass manufacturing environment and must not be allergic to a dusty environment or fumes associated with this type of process.
  • Able to climb tower ladders up to 300' in height.
  • Capable of lifting 75lbs
  • Must be able to hear adequately in order to work safely in a construction environment
  • Able to work in field conditions that experience inclement weather and regular exposure to the elements.
  • Frequent travel to field sites and equipment supplier sites where test subject equipment is located.
